Considering CBD for Anxiety? Here’s What Research & Experience Tells Us

Sep 22, 2021

Modern America is a get-it-done society, where your measure of success is based on your achievements and ability to spin many plates at once. We’re expected to raise families, generate income, sustain a healthy social life, exercise, drink eight glasses of water, eat well, maintain our homes, somehow manage to stay fit, get a decent night’s sleep, look good, and somehow maintain balance while doing it.

For too many people, especially those living with anxiety, tackling the simplest tasks in life can get overwhelming or even paralyzing.

According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults and 18.1% of the population every year. Despite the prevalence of anxiety, only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment, with too many suffering in silence, not knowing that anxiety can indeed be treated.

We were once among those who suffered from anxiety until we discovered CBD as a life-changing option.

At MATCH CANNA, we want to  help people regain autonomy over their lives by providing sound information about CBD, or cannabidiol, so that others become empowered to explore plant-based options to help manage anxiety.

What is Anxiety?

So, what is anxiety, exactly?

“For me, anxiety is like a hard edge. In my body, it feels like this friction,” says our co-founder Christina, “It manifests in a variety of ways like nervousness, stress, or just feeling overwhelmed. But I realized I had a problem when those feelings didn’t go away and my anxiety felt ever-present.”

Can you relate to this feeling?

The American Psychological Association defines anxiety as an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders experience symptoms like restlessness, feeling “on edge”, feeling uncontrollably worried, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and problems with sleep.

When anxiety develops, the body goes into “alert”, preparing itself for fight or flight mode. In response, your brain floods your central nervous system with adrenaline and cortisol, hence the physical response we feel when anxious.

Common treatments for anxiety include using medications like antidepressants, benzodiazepines, tricyclics, SSRIs, and beta-blockers. Therapeutic treatments include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and taking steps to integrate practices like mindfulness and meditation into one’s day.

For many, these traditional routes to treat anxiety haven’t been working, making many feel defeated, but thankfully, that is beginning to change.

The Farm Bill of 2018 opened the door to a whole new option of legal plant-based treatments, and now one in three Americans are turning to CBD to manage their health and well-being.

CBD As a New Hope for Millions

“I honestly don’t know where I’d be without CBD. If you would have told me that I would be using cannabis as one of the pillars of my health journey five years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it,” says Christina of the cannabinoid that has been changing lives across the globe, “CBD has been my go-to since being diagnosed last year with an autoimmune condition. Anxiety was the number one symptom of my autoimmune disease and CBD helps me manage the chaos.”

“My body loves it, and I know it,” echoes our other co-founder Maggy, “It makes me a better person, and a better mom,” she says, noting that CBD was particularly helpful in helping her manage anxiety and mental well-being postpartum.

Our goal with MATCH CANNA is to use CBD to find effective and luxurious relaxation and relief for EVERY body with thoughtfully created, plant-based products that are rooted in nature and backed by science.

Here’s what we have found out about anxiety and CBD through research and our experiences:

A Peek into Clinical Research

The research on CBD and its interaction with the mind and body hinges on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which exists in all mammals. The ECS is responsible for regulating all our bodily systems and bringing our bodies into balance, or homeostasis.

What is miraculous about the endocannabinoid system is that it is designed to receive and distribute plant-based cannabinoids (or phytocannabinoids) throughout the body. What many don’t realize is that the body already contains cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids), and when we use cannabinoids like CBD, it adds more of what the body already has, acting as critical regulators of our health.

The ECS is often attributed to helping people regulate mood. Early research supports that the ECS is critical in regulating fear-based responses, fear extinction, and overall emotional well-being.

How Cannabinoids Work to Reduce Anxiety

Because THC and its non-intoxicating cannabinoid counterpart CBD have been under prohibition for so long, research is finally and quickly catching up with increased legalization to reveal more scientific evidence about what we already know about the anti-anxiety effects of CBD.

Reviews of research so far state that CBD’s effect on anxiety has to do with the CB1 receptor within the endocannabinoid system, our serotonin receptors, and other brain receptors that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors.

The Role of CBD in Fear-Based & Panic Responses

If you’ve experienced anxiety, you’ll know what it means to be “paralyzed by fear”.

A 2013 human study used CBD to determine fear-based responses in a conditioned context designed to elicit fear. In other words, people were exposed to things that made them afraid.

When exposed to the fear-inducing stimuli after using CBD, fear-based responses were notably diminished or distinguished, with this study suggesting that CBD could be effective for treating PTSD and phobias.

How CBD May Combat Social Anxiety

Many of us have a fear of being in the spotlight, and for some of us, social settings can be torture due to social anxiety.

A 2011 study placed 24 participants with social anxiety disorder in their most feared setting: one where they’d have to engage in public speaking. After administering CBD to the participants, the researchers noted that CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in speech performance.

This study has far-reaching applications for helping people in various contexts manage social or professional pressure.

CBD, Anxiety & Sleep

Sleep is an extremely crucial part of managing one’s health and mental health, and when one is experiencing  anxiety, sleep may be tough to come by.

Research reveals that CBD can regulate sleep. Initial studies show that the endocannabinoid system is involved in the sleep-wake cycle and sleep homeostasis, which is the body’s way of signaling whether it has had enough sleep.

MATCH CANNA’s Personal Experience with CBD & Anxiety

Christina lived an overall healthy, happy, and well-balanced life until a four-year-long struggle with insomnia and uncharacteristic anxiety changed her life forever. “I knew there was something going on with my body; I was feeling out of sorts,” she remembers.

After visiting numerous doctors to no answers, almost losing faith in the medical system, she finally met the doctor that would give her a clear diagnosis of an auto-immune disease that would explain her sleep issues and why her anxiety was becoming so debilitating in her life. Despite never considering cannabis as an option before, getting her medical cannabis card was one of the best things she ever did for herself. “It saved me when I couldn’t sleep, and now CBD comes to my rescue every time I’m feeling anxious,” she says.

Early in her own life, Maggy recognized the effects cannabis and CBD had in managing her anxiety throughout many of her life stages, which is why she was so supportive when Christina began developing a blend of cold-pressed botanically-infused cannabis products by hand. She immediately saw that cannabinoids and other botanicals were working wonders for her best friend and sister-in-law while also providing pain relief for those close to them.

And so, MATCH CANNA was born.
